Kukui Oil, rich in essential fatty acids, is a natural botanical moisturizer. Kukui Oil contains approximately 28% Omega-3s (alpha linolenic acid; 18:3w3) and 40% Omega-6s (linoleic acid; 18:2w6). This 1/1.5 ratio of Omega-3/Omega-6 follows the course of human evolution. In the last 100 years there has been a dramatic change in the ratio of Omega-6 and Omega-3 fats consumed in the diet. This change, perhaps more than any other dietary factor, has contributed to the epidemic of modern disease.
This is significant because Omega-6 fats promote inflammation, where Omega-3s counteract Omega-6s and are anti-inflammatory. Omega-3s have been proven beneficial to many organs of the body including the skin, which is the bodies largest organ.

Omega 3 Kukui Oil reduces Erythema
Oils of Aloha is a Hawaii based company. There are many outdoor activities in which people participate. Unfortunately too many times people do not protect themselves properly from the strong Hawaiian sun. Oils of Aloha approached AMA Labs in New York to perform a study on the effects of SolAleur® on UV radiation induced erythema. SolAleur® is a proprietary blend of Omega-3 Kukui Oil , Macadamia Oil and Vitamin E. We were told by AMA that they didn’t want to waste our money because ‘everyone knows’ that vegetable oils increase erythema (redness) induced by UV-radiation. Knowing that SolAleur® with its high level of Omega-3s was different than most vegetable oils that are high in pro-inflammatory Omega-6s. We convinced AMA Labs to perform the tests.
AMA performed the test on sites that were not treated, ones treated with SolAleur® and those treated with high Omega-6 corn oil. Sites were treated before irradiation, immediately after irradiation and 1 and 24 hours after irradiation. Sites were then irradiated with different doses, from 1 med (amount to cause redness) to 2.5 meds. This first test proved that Omega-6 oils increases erythema as compared to untreated sites. More importantly it showed that Omega-3 SolAleur® significantly reduced the redness when applied before irradiation, immediately after irradiation and to a lesser extent 24 hours after irradiation.
The chart above shows that SolAleur® with its Omega-3 content prepares the skin for insults, if applied before or helps limit damage if applied after the irradiation occurred. Applying Omega-3 Kukui Oil or SolAleur® to the skin increases the Omega-3 fats in the skin and enhances the skins ability to withstand repeated environmental attacks.
We believe that the Omega-3s added to the skin either inhibits the Cox Cascade or has the Cox Cascade form less series 2 prostaglandins (pro-inflammatory) and more series 3 prostaglandins (anti-inflammatory).
• SolAleur® and Omega-3 Kukui Oil are not a replacement of a sunscreen and we highly recommend proper sun safety.

Oils of Aloha conducted a survey with people that have eczema like symptoms. We sent samples of the Omega 3 Kukui Oil to the testees. Of the respondents that that completed the test:
84% said the oil improved there symptoms
84% said they would continue to use it
All said they would recommend it to others and some said they would recommend it to their doctor
84% had no problem using the oil
Some of the eczema like symptoms were rough, itchy, dry skin, flakes, cracking and bleeding, bumps and rashes. Primary help from the Omega 3 Kukui Oil was that it moistened the skin and soothed the itching. The oil also, helped some of the flaking, cracking and bumps. We know this oil does not cure eczema but it does help moisten the skin and brings nourishing anti-inflammatory Omega 3 fats to the skin.
Omega-3 Kukui Oil and Dry Skin
Omega-3 Kukui Oil is an excellent moisturizer. It helps replenish the lipid barrier in the skin, thus allowing the skin to nourish itself from within.
Oils of Aloha conducted a Moisturization Test for SolAleur®. Novameter readings were taken on skin treated with SolAleur® at intervals of: 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour and 3 hours after the oil was applied. The test results showed that the moisture level in the skin increased 9% after 15 minutes and 14% after 30 minutes. At 1 and 3 hours the level was increased by over 20% compared to untreated skin. Thus proving that Omega-3 Kukui Oil improves the skins ability to hydrate itself.
We understand that you can find somebody that is allergic to everything. We had a lab perform a Repeat Insult Patch Test (RIPT) on the oil. Of all the people that completed the test, no one had any adverse reactions.
Summary of Oils of Aloha® Repeated Insult Patch Test (RIPT) for Kukui Oil
Consumer Product Testing Co. conducted a Repeated Insult Patch Test (RIPT) in February of 2005. The objective was to determine by repetitive epidermal contact the potential of a test material to induce primary or cumulative irritation and/or allergic contact sensitization.
Fifty-two participants, male and female, ranging in age from 17 to 79 completed this two phase study. During the first phase, the Induction Phase, a small pad with approximately 0.2 ml of kukui oil was applied to the upper back between the shoulder blades three times per weeks for three weeks. The pads were removed twenty-four hours after being applied and the test sites were evaluated before each new pad was placed.
The second phase, the Challenge Phase, occurred two weeks after the final Induction patch was applied. During this phase, another small patch with 0.2 ml of kukui oil was applied to a site adjacent to the original test site. Once the patch was removed, the area was evaluated after twenty-four and seventy-two hours.
All evaluations of the test site for every participant were negative throughout both testing phases, showing no adverse effect on the skin. Therefore, under the conditions of this study, pure kukui oil with Vitamin E did not indicate a potential for dermal irritation or allergic contact sensitization.
Omega-3 Kukui Oil and Cancer Radiation
There are two common types of radiation burns, those induced by the sun and those induced by cancer treatment. This segment discusses cancer radiation burns.
One day a lady walked into the office of the CEO of Oils of Aloha, Dana Gray, and told him she was alive today because of him. She said she had to stop radiation treatment for breast cancer because of a condition called ‘a super sunburn’. This is where the skin burns and turns black and cracks. Her daughter gave her a bottle of our Omega-3 Kukui Oil and it worked so well to softened her skin, that she could finish her treatment.
The Omega-3 Kukui Oil assists in a number of ways. First it works as a moisturizer. The oil replenishes the lipid barrier in the skin. This allows the skin to hold in moisture and nutrients, thereby becoming healthier. Secondly, the lipid barrier is replenished with about 30% Omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid. This is an anti-inflammatory that we believe reduces the pro-inflammatory series 2 prostaglandins that are formed during the Cox Cascade. This reduces the inflammation and damage done by the radiation.

...I had a skin graph on my upper thigh after surgery for breast cancer.
